Blade Sharpening

Steven Rodrigue

A sharp blade is one of the most fundamental tools in homesteading and preparedness—yet it’s also one of the most commonly misunderstood skills.

This hands-on class covers the foundational principles of blade sharpening, focusing on knives and common working blades used for food prep, field tasks, and everyday utility. Attendees will learn how sharpening actually works, not just how to “rub steel on stone.”

Topics include:

  • Understanding edge geometry and why angle matters
  • Stone selection and basic sharpening setups
  • The role of burr formation in proper sharpening
  • How to know when you’re done—and when you’re not
  • Common mistakes that keep blades dull no matter how long you sharpen

Rather than chasing gadgets or shortcuts, this class emphasizes repeatable technique and feedback—especially learning to feel and manage the burr that tells you real progress is happening.

By the end of the session, attendees will understand why experienced sharpeners say:
“If you ain’t got burr, you ain’t got shit.”

Because without a burr, you’re not sharpening—you’re just polishing disappointment.
